I have never been insistent upon sending my kids to private school but with Raider we just made the decision that it was the best choice for him. The more time he spends there, the more I am leaning toward sending Haylie and James as well.
Case in point: Tonight when I picked Raider up from youth group he was buzzing about what he is going to be when he grows up. He summarized his God-given gifts for me and explained how he was going to use them for God in his career of choice. I was curious what got him thinking on this topic and he said his math teacher (who he really likes) pulled him aside in class earlier that day and mentioned that he is really talented at Math. He asked Raider what he wants to do and Raider told him he wants to be an engineer or architect. The Math teacher asked him how he's going to use that for God and they proceeded to discuss using our gifts for the one who gave them to us - which obviously made an impact on him becuase our whole conversation was about the fact that God gives us gifts and it's up to us to use them! I am so thankful for positive role models in Raider's life! You just don't have those kind of conversations in public school.

You are so right, Raider would never have had that kind of conversation in a public school. That is such a huge blessing that you are able to send him to private. My aunt has her sons in public schools her in our town and she has told me some of the things they are teaching and doing and I am really disgusted and heartbroken...
God will surely use Raider for his glory since he is such a willing vessel. How awesome!
That is so awesome! That kind of outside influence on a teenager is priceless (since mom's and dad's are so uncool!)
You're exactly right Jaime! I have had those kinds of converstions with him before but because I'm 'Mom' and so very uncool :) he just doesn't hear it the same way from someone else. I'm sure it plants a seed when I talk to him about things like that but the teacher was the water and sunlight he needed to make the ideas grow. Gotta love that!!
too bad those discussions are outlawed in public schools. i am a huge proponent for public ed since if people who care about their children's education don't send them to public school, then what do schools look like? well, they end up like many of them are now--very broken! matt and i have had this conversation several times because we don't want to have to fight the seemingly never-ending battle with public school admin (and dead beat parents), but we also want to support the hard working teachers and the system as a whole. i agree that for raider, private school is the best thing. all children deserve a great education. i just wish all parents were as involved in their kids' lives as you and micah! that way public schools would be great places for kids to learn and grow academically, personally and spiritually.
I was always so pro public school, obviously, I was a public school teacher. I found that there were lots of Christian teachers working in public schools, they just have to be more subtle. I read the Max Lucado books to my class. On their own they figured out that Eli was God. I didn't even say a thing... Plus, I can just see Haylie, like he mom, getting other public school kids excited about God. Maybe we'll be lucky and our kids will light fires in others, the way the teacher got Raider going. I am so excited for him!!
One last thing, I am reading "Cure for the Common Life." You suggested it on your blog, I read it, and guess what? YOU got ME to think/rethink the purpose God has for me:)!
